Your cards are always with you, and ready to use. No more digging through wallets, drawers, or that one shoebox under the bed. Every card you've added shows up in CardCue Pro, ready to scan at the register , your phone is the wallet now. Works on cards that store value in a barcode or QR code. Magstripe-only cards, chip-and-PIN cards, and traditional prepaid cards still need to come with you, sadly , but at least Cue keeps their balances and PINs straight.

The features I cut

Most of what makes a product good is the thing you didn't ship. A budget tracker, a receipt scanner, a marketplace, a social feed, all individually good ideas, all cut, and the test that told me which to keep: does the feature build trust, or spend it?

A year in, what I got wrong about my own app

Four things I was confidently wrong about. I thought the app's job was to show cards (it's to remember them). I thought onboarding was about teaching (it's about demonstrating). I thought notifications were about value (they're about quiet). I thought Swift would be the hardest part.

Apps should sound like people

Every app is a voice in your day, whether it wants to be or not. Most apps have picked the default voice of their framework, or of legal, or of nobody. On picking a voice, the thousand rejections behind one good sentence, and the off switch that's the same respect as the voice itself.

I stopped paying for AI

Six months into building, the API bill. A few pennies per scan, spread across a user base scanning 30 cards in onboarding, is a few dollars per user in cloud costs. Then iOS 18.1 shipped. FoundationModels made the whole scanning pipeline on-device, free, and silent. The new economics of a privacy-first app.

How a radius became a feeling

I spent three months on a corner radius. Not drawing circles, rendering it in every context, living with it, discovering on day 11 that the Watch one was off. The real function of a design system isn't documentation or brand. It's resistance to drift.

The best apps are the ones you rarely open

A hundred and forty-seven pickups a week. Ambient apps, Apple's second layer, and the locked phone on the kitchen counter, the real design prompt for any utility app worth building. You increase product quality by decreasing product surface.

Thirty seconds is the whole app

The longest you should spend inside CardCue Pro on any given day is thirty seconds. The app is great to the extent that it evaporates at the register. An apparatus for the ordinary moment of paying, you, a barista, a coffee, and the phone already back in your pocket.

The app that never asked me to sign in

Seventeen sign-ins in a single day. Does a gift card app need to know who you are? The honest answer is no. No accounts, no sign-up, no OAuth, no magic links. The design cost of saying no, and the dangerous version that most apps ship instead.

A notification is a promise you make to someone's attention

The last notification that was right, a Starbucks card, a rainy Tuesday, a single line on a lock screen. An app at war with the default: five gates, twelve signals, and a year of silence to earn the banner. The right notification is worth a hundred wrong ones.
