Straight answers to the questions people actually ask
Eleven questions, each answered in one short paragraph with its source. Then a quiz, if you want to test yourself.
Do gift cards expire?
The money on a card you paid for lasts at least five years from when it was bought or last loaded, by federal law, no matter what the plastic says. Some states go further; in California most cards never expire. Free bonus cards from promotions can expire.
12 CFR 1005.20; California Civil Code 1749.5.Is a gift card worth more than cash?
Only if you paid less than what's on it, and you spend it at a store you already go to, on things you would buy anyway. A card you got as a gift for a store you never visit is worth less than cash to you, and more to a friend who shops there.
The Now what? tool in this guide.I owe money on a credit card. Should I use my gift cards first?
Yes, every time. The gift card is money you already paid for. The credit card charges about 21.52% a year on average when you carry a balance. Spend the gift card and put the cash toward the card.
Federal Reserve G.19, Q1 2026.What happens to the money on cards nobody uses?
The store keeps it. Accountants call it breakage. Starbucks recorded $222.4 million of it in 2025. In 2019, about $3 billion of US gift card money went unspent, about 3% of everything loaded onto cards that year.
Starbucks via SEC EDGAR, fiscal 2025; Mercator Advisory Group via CBS News, 2020.Why do I always spend more than what's on the card?
Because it feels like free money, and the little bit left over feels like nothing. 44% of people typically spend more than the card's value. Decide what you're buying before you walk in.
TSG and Bank of America, 2026; Blackhawk Network, 2026.Why do people forget gift cards?
They save it for the perfect day and the perfect day never comes. In one study, people given three weeks used the card five times as often as people given two months. Pick a date.
Shu and Gneezy, 2010.Can I get cash for a gift card?
Sometimes. In California, under $15 left means you can ask for cash. In Massachusetts, after you have used 90%. Several other states have small-balance rules. Otherwise, the better move is to give the card to someone who will use it.
California SB 22 (2025); M.G.L. c. 200A, s. 5D.How do I give a card to someone else?
CardCue Pro can send a card's details to someone you choose. The card leaves your wallet the moment you send it, waits in encrypted escrow for up to 14 days, and the first person to open the link claims it. It sends details, not money, and what the receiver sees is what the sender recorded, not a balance CardCue Pro has confirmed.
