Buyer's guide

The best gift card tracker for iPhone

Most of these apps store a card just fine. Here is what actually separates them, and how to judge any of them in two minutes.

Five things that decide whether you get the money back

1. Does it remind you at the store?

This is the whole game. A wallet you have to remember to open is a wallet you will not open. Look for location reminders that work with the app closed.

2. Does it warn before the money dies?

Expiry dates and monthly dormancy fees quietly eat balances. An app that knows the dates can tell you in time.

3. Can you actually pay with it?

A stored photo is not much use at the till. You want the scannable barcode on screen.

4. Does it handle more than gift cards?

Punch passes, memberships and prepaid balances are forgotten money too.

5. What does it want from you first?

Some apps ask for an account, an email and a login before showing you anything. Ask whether it needs one at all.

Where CardCue Pro is different

It chirps at the right moment

The hard part is not storing the card, it is remembering it while you are standing at the register. CardCue Pro watches for the store, not the calendar, and can nudge you with the app closed.

It covers more than gift cards

Punch passes, memberships, loyalty rewards and prepaid balances live in the same wallet, because forgotten value is not only a gift-card problem.

It works without an account

Scan, get reminders and use the barcode at the register having told us nothing about yourself. An account is only for cloud backup and moving to a new phone.
